Time to Unwrap My Christmas Gift For Just You: John Denver’s ‘The Garden Song’

by Patrick Muir on December 19, 2012

Well, I’ve been waiting for you to unwrap your Christmas gift from Patrick’s Garden for over two years now. I just keep forgetting it under the tree. I’m not ashamed to say I’m a huge fan of Mr. John Denver. How could one man project such a wholesome and humble persona in the drug induced 1970′s. But more importantly he was a songwriter whose iconic songs are as relevant and fresh as they ever were.

But I had never had heard of The Garden Song until I stumbled upon it on youtube one day with him backgrounded by the Muppets. He wrote it and it appeared on John Denver (1979). My favorite parts are the background singing foxgloves and the moutheywatermelon and even the thistle.

So to unwrap, just hit the title of this post and John and his merry Muppets will Christmas magically appear.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good growing season in 2013.

Patrick

Hi Patrick,
Loved your gift of John Denver, Such a humble Man. I got another Christmas gift today. 12″ of snow (which we really needed the moisture here in DesMoines IA.) But the wind and ice I can do without. Lots of limbs down. Oh well, this too shall pass. Only 13 more weeks till spring!!!!!
I enjoy your blog and wish you a Merry Christmas and a healthy happy New Year.
Peace be with you, Karen

Hey Karen,
Glad you enjoyed your gift. There have been fewer humbler stars in the world than JD. 12″ of snow is also a gift with the lack of water during the drought of 2/3 of the country. Hopefully you can stay inside and enjoy.

And a very, merry Christmas to you as well.

Patrick

Hey Layanee,
Have I ever told you what a beautiful name you’ve been blessed with from probably your momma? Glad you enjoyed your gift and I couldn’t imagine JD singing anything would be a good way to start one’s day.
Wishing you a blessed Christmas for you and your family,
Patrick

It is really a cute video and nice song. I too like the singing flowers. The cranky old men were funny at the end too.

Hey Donna,
Glad you enjoyed my little prezzie (as we say in Australia). Yes the cranky old me gave me an extra smile because they were such an integral park of the Muppet experience.

I’ve always loved this song! Such a sweet voice that man had! Do I date myself too much when I tell you I remember seeing this on TV? Thanks for reminding me of it! Going to bed happy now. : )

Merry Christmas to you, Patrick!

I wonder how our lives would have been enriched if he would have lived. I guess I’m dating myself because I remember and enjoyed the show but I don’t remember this particular show. Merry Christmas back to you

Loved the video! He really was one of the good guys. And ahead of his time, too, I think, with the “grow my own” phrase! Hadn’t remembered this song – it was wonderful to hear and see. Have a Merry Christmas!

Fantastic song. Thank you for putting it up. I will also one day put it in my blog and give you all the credit for finding it. These types of singing voices are slowly disappearing, it seems, replaced with Lady Gaga! Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year :-)

I do remember the song, Patrick. I was a huge John Denver fan starting back in my high-school days. I have many of his albums, and was so sad to hear that he had died in a plane crash–way too young. Thank you for sharing that sweet memory. Happy New Year!

Peter Paul and Mary sang this, too, so I am not sure about JD being author…nonetheless, it’s one of my favorites. Aspiring guitar players: this is a good tune to mess around with—basic chords.
